PNEUMATOPHORES : BREATHING ROOTS
EXHIBITION: ART & ENVIRONMENT
ABU DHABI MUSIC & ARTS FOUNDATION: 2017
Pneumatophores — the aerial roots of mangrove trees — are specialized for gaseous exchange, allowing the trees to breathe even when submerged during high tides. Beyond their sculptural beauty, these roots sustain entire ecosystems. They transport air, store oxygen, and offer refuge to countless species: crabs and sea snails climb them to escape predators, algae and shellfish cling to their surfaces, and young fish find safety within their tangled forms.
In the series “Pneumatophores – Breathing Roots,” large-format giclée photographic prints on fine art paper explore these roots as both natural marvels and metaphors. They echo the vision of the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan — whose leadership planted the roots of a thriving nation. Just as the mangrove sustains life, his vision continues to nourish our evolving civilization.
